Try to match the natural growing conditions of the wildflowers you plan
to grow as closely as you can, otherwise you will have to modify your site
conditions--adding coarse sand to wet or poorly drained soils to increase drainage, or
adding humus or peat moss to improve moisture retention in dry soils. Use aluminum sulfate
to lower pH (peat moss will also lower pH), or ground limestone to raise pH.
Under each species listed you will find suggested cultural requirements,
(light, moisture, soil "pH") and plant descriptions (flowering time, color,
average height). Use these as a guide to choosing and selecting plants for your site
conditions. Blooming times and height are approximate for Woodstock, Conn. Soil pH ratings
are: very acid, 4.0-5.0; moderately acid, 5.0-6.0; slightly acid, 6.0-7.0.
